Large paperback. First published by Vanguard Press of New York in 1933 under the title of 'The Autobiography of a Liverpool Irish Slummy' - this is the 'edited' version with the addition of photographs and maps of the Liverpool of the time, published by The Bluecoat Press of Liverpool. 240 pages. Apart from a small crease acoss the bottom right of the front cover, this is in excellent condition. Born in abject poverty in one of Liverpool's worst slums, Pat O'mara chronicles a tough childhood dominated by a brutal, alcoholic father. Survival is paramount but there is no room for sentiment in this remarkable account of one man's fight to escape the drabness and povery that surrounds him. Essential reading for anyone interested in social history and the lives of those born without privilege and opportunity. The revelations of the techniques of survival, the money-lenders, pawbrokers, false compensation claims, the tricks and frauds perpetrated against forerign seamen are dramtically recorded. Here are eye-witness accounts of major incidents such as the Lusitania riots and Police Strike. Above all however it is the claustrophpobia of slum life that captures the attention and makes the book so indispensable to anyone interested in Social History or Liverpool in general. |
