Description
Hornbill (or burong kenyalang) is the most popular Iban carving. It is a stylized interpretation of a striking Borneo bird which holds an honored place in Iban folklore.
A special festival, the Gawai Burong or Gawai Kenyalang, the carved hornbill images were displayed. During the festival, the hornbill image were paraded up and down the open porch (tanju) of the longhouse, adorned with jewelry and offerings of food and placed on top of poles. The spirit of the carved hornbill will left its image, flew to an enemy longhouse and slaughtered or weakened all the enemy warriors. This ceremony was particularly useful during warring and headhunting days.
The hornbills are elaborate carvings; the horn is craved into an elaborate spiral over the bird’s back. The whole bird is carved from two pieces of soft wood.
On auction, an OLD hornbill (Burong Kenyalang) statue which is about 20 years old, rare and beautiful. Exclusively at borneomuseum!!
