Up for sale is my personal Krell KSA-300S PURE CLASS-A (300 Watts x 2/ 8ohm; 2400 Watts x 2/ 1ohm) Power Amplifier. This massive almost 200lbs./90kg. beast PURE CLASS-A power amplifier overall condition is 9/10. Recently serviced and many internal PARTS changed to new. [Has receipt to proof].

This is the LEGENDARY KRELL KSA-200S stereo amplifier. It is considered by many to be one of the finest sounding amplifiers ever built. It produces incredible bass slam, while delivering mellow mids and sweet highs, sounding as if it were a tube amplifier in the mids and highs. It is in absolutely perfect working condition. 

Krell has perfected their Sustained Plateau Biasing Class A operation sliding bias that lets the amp operates in Class A only as the music demands. This amp was from an era when Krell was still supporting the extreme low impedance loads. The KSA-300S is rated to deliver 2400W per channel into 1 ohm. In contrast, the FPB-600 for example, is spec'd at 2400W into 2 ohm and not even rated into 1 ohm. This is not meant as a knock against Krell. It was just smart strategy on their part to stop supporting the extreme low impedance loads because the market had shifted to easier to drive speakers. But if you need serious low impedance drive, this is the amp to get!!

When it comes to real sonic performance, this very high-end super-expansive (list US$9,500.00) "Stereophile CLASS-A Recommended Amplifier" is a very desirable unit among Krell models (the MDA and the earlier KSA) and at par with the newer Krell FPB-600/600c/700cx. It has been U.S.'s Stereophile magazine long-term REFERENCE AMPLIFIER.

The amp also features input power biasing, which can be monitored by the LED meter on the front display...With the power biasing, the Amp will monitor its own power consumption, compared to its operating temperature, and self adjust accordingly to keep cool under operating condition. The Amp knows when it is getting warm, and will adjust its power consumption accordingly. The KSA-300S has balanced (XLR) and single-ended (RCA) inputs.

Weighs almost 200lbs./90kg. Built like a tank.

Inside its very thick solid steel metal casing sits the transformer which is bigger than the size of a human head. Hence, is capable for an extraordinarily robust deep BASS which Krell is famous for.

First up, the Krell KSA-300S. Yes, one of those super-heavy, super-expansive amplifiers, and my long-term reference. My initial reaction was that the Krell sounded a little smoother at the very top end and more forward in the low-to mid-treble, though not to the point where it was analytic or etched. It was simply a bit more detailed. The Aragon was a little darker-sounding, except in the highest treble, where the Krell's top end was free of the slight extra zing - the Aragon sounds a bit wispy in comparison.

Yet not always. While Mary Black and the King's Singers sounded a little more substantial on the Krell, other recordings, such as the jazz/vocal Potato Radio (Justice JR#0802-2), sounded airier and more spacious on the Aragon.

There are times when the Krell will definitely show its stuff - see my January 1996 review of the Wilson WITT loudspeaker (Vol.19 No.1) - but for many readers the differences on lesser loudspeakers will not justify the added cost. The Aragon may have come up a little shy of the Krell overall, but the law of diminishing returns is alive and well; the 8008 definitely holds its own, and 80% of the performance for about 20% of the cost is a pretty fair exchange (and I'm being conservative here, some may well put that figure closer to 90%). As ever, that last increment of performance is very expansive.

An audiophile review...

I previously owned a Jadis DA60 amp and now I have a second hand Krell KSA-300S with a new Classe CP-47.5 preamp; what a change!!! what a revolution.

This giant amp is a real killer. The build quality is incredible (the power supply is bigger than the human head. 5.000va.. 300W /8ohms). This amp is, of course, incredibly heavy. The Krell excels in its ability to recreate the spatial aspect of the Music (a bit like the Jadis but with a greater precision). Second among Krell's attributes are the ability to plumb the depths of the bass range. Krell rock my world, and on the other hand, it is the most natural, non colored, delicate, articulate and sweet amp that I have ever heard! I control my audio world!

Summary:

What can be said about KRELL's KSA 300S CLASS A amp. I have seen and heard a lot of amps since my first CES show in 1984. When this amp hit the market I was really amazed by it's dynamics of quick and clean sound. First of all I don't recommend this unit for any tube lovers at all, since most of them like listening to soft filtered lazy rolled off sound and that is not what the KRELL is. This unit has the slam on the bass so quick like no other amps I have heard before. The extraordinarily robust deep bass extention on this unit is so deep and controlled, the sparkling highs are extended and very clean. The superior transient response in the over all sound is also very quick, accurate and clean. This amp must be used with good components in order to achieve the maximum sound quality. I do also recommended having adequate power out of your wall outlet at least a 20 amp power line.

This Krell KSA-300S is in perfect working condition (just recently serviced by Krell specialist in Malaysia, AUDIO IMAGE P.J. - costing me RM1,650.00 (US$475.00).  Picture (above) shows the internal parts that were replaced with new ones.  Now the amp performs like a "NEW UNIT" - marvelous Pure Class-A sound with very tight & strong bass which Krell is famous for.
