Carved doors: Among the Kayan and Kenyah people, doorways to the individual "bilik" or rooms of the chiefs and aristocratic families were enhanced with carvings and paintings, both to denote status as well as to repel malevolent spirits.

Large slabs of the buttress roots of the "tapang" tree measuring three to four feet wide are usually cut for these doors; occasionally the "belian" or "kayu malam" ironwood is also used.

You are bidding on a primitive work of art From Sarawak, Borneo. The door is possibly carved from "Nyatoh" tree, an extremely hard and dense wood, and only a single buttress is used to finish the job.

The door depicts a large Anthropomorphic figure complete with arms and leg and a slightly bulging stomach at center. Two heads and arm of the "Aso" dog are seen carved around the door handle.

A very primitive work of art from the natives of Borneo, it is now open for all collectors to own a piece of Sarawak, Borneo. The door could be as old as 30 years, all traditionally handmade, no machine involved. It looks as good as new now after cleaning and polishing.
