About the stamp set MALAYSIA'S FASHION HERITAGE

  • The stamps features the Nyonya kebaya , the traditional costume of the Nyonya of Malaysia. This traditional Nyonya kebaya top is of voile and beautifully hand-embroidered or machine-sewn (by a skilled seamstress). Details of this fashion are enclosed in a leaflet inside the first day cover.
  • Notes:  The Baba and Nyonya refer to early Chinese migrants who came to the Malay peninsular from the 18th century to the 19th century. (Baba refers to the male and Nyonya refers to the female). Some married Malays or are decendents of 'old' Chinese families who assimilated many cultural practices of the Malays into their Chinese culture. Today their cultural practices follow to some extent that of the Chinese but their spoken language /dialect (mainly Hokkien) differ to an extent from that of the Chinese - their spoken language peppered with many Malay words. Baba and Nyonya were concentrated in the states of Penang and Melaka (Malacca), Malaysia and in Singapore.
