Crafts of the Highlands and Islands

Manners, John

About the book

The Scottish Highlands and Islands, sometimes bleak, often solitary, enduringly beautiful, exert as powerful an influence on the imagination as on those who live and work there, and few subjects are surrounded with as much mystique, coupled with practical realism, as the traditional crafts of this romantic area. John Manners, author of Country Crafts Today and Country Crafts in Pictures, has travelled throughout the Highlands and Islands gathering material and photographing the craftsmen at work and he presents a fascinating record of the men and women whose skill and dedication ensure the continuation of traditional crafts.

The growth of tourism is increasing the demand for familiar products such as Fair Isle jerseys, Caithness glass and Hebridean tweeds, and artist-trained craftsmen produce silver, pottery, horn, pewter and woodwork in traditional and contemporary styles. Sadly, many of the older crafts, including thatching and straw-basket making, are dying out, while some, notably saddlery, spinning and weaving, barely survive. Crafts unique to this area, from Orkney chairs to the now defunct Ballachulish slates are described, along with the traditional crafting crafts of stone walling, tanning and cheese-making.

The appendices contain useful information on where to see craftsmen at work; craft museums; relevant literature and addresses, making this an indispensable guide for visitors to the area and all concerned with the preservation of traditional skills and crafts.
