OVERVIEW

These Finnish songs were created as part of the WPA California Folk Music Project - part of FDR?s New Deal in the 1930s and 1940s.  It was organized and directed by folk music collector Sidney Robertson Cowell for the Northern California Work Projects Administration. Sponsored by the University of California, Berkeley, and cosponsored by the Archive of American Folk Song (now the Archive of Folk Culture, American Folklife Center), this undertaking was one of the earliest ethnographic field projects to document folk music in the United States.

These recordings represent Finns in Berkeley and Central Valley singing unaccompanied Finnish songs recorded by Sidney Robertson Cowell in Berkeley, California on November 5, 1939.
